Parent Groups
The Troy Special Services Parent Advisory Committee board members have been trying to come up with a way to support parents. We are parents just like you, however three of the four of us have a child in high school, so we will not be around for very much longer. We need to find a way to involve more parents to carry on when our children have graduated. We would like to start some subgroups that could focus on topics that are relevant to the issues they face. This is a very new idea and we have not worked out all the logistics so we are
looking for input from all parents of students with special needs.
Below are ten topics or possible subgroups that we feel need to be explored more deeply.
IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) IDEA governs how states and public agencies provide early intervention, special education and related services to eligible children and youth with disabilities & NCLB (Public Law PL 107-110, the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001): What is it? What should I know about it? How does it affect me and my child?
Tests: What tests are available? What do the test measure? Which tests are given to my child? Why? How do I read a test? What is the REED (Review of Existing Evaluation Data)?
Accommodations: What accommodations are appropriate for my child? Who will provide the accommodations? How will I know if my child is receiving the accommodations? How should it be written in an IEP so the accommodations are provided as they should be?
Interventions: What are the common interventions used in the TSD? How do I know if the intervention is working? If my child is not making progress how do I get a different intervention for my child?
Assistive Technology: What assistive technology is appropriate for my child? How do I get the appropriate assistive technology for my child?
Measurable Goals: How do I know if the goals in my child’s IEP are measurable? What do the reports mean?
IEP Meeting: What is my role as a team member? Who are all the other “players” on the team? What is their title and what are they responsible for? How should I prepare
Legislative Watch Group: a group of parents that would keep track of local, state, and federal laws and regulations and keep the PAC members apprised of any proposed or actual changes.
Group of parents facing similar issues: Casual get-togethers of parents facing the same issues to share ideas and support one another. (ie. Asperger's, High School, Middle School, Transition, etc)
Please complete the poll below to include all of the groups that you would be interested in. Also fill out the form if you would like to be contacted or are willing to volunteer.
Once we get a sense of who wants to be involved and what issues they face, we can form the subgroups. If you are interested in being involved please fill out as much information below as you wish to share.
